We have an area that is approximately 100 feet by 100 feet and enclosed with a six foot fence to protect the contents from forest animals. We call it the 'orchard' only because we have a few apple trees in there. But basically we try to grow as much as we can in there that needs a bit of protection. The very first live tea plants that I bought were placed in the orchard to give them the best shot at surviving. These plants are now about four years old. They are specimen plants, not production plants so we don't spend a lot of time pruning and shaping them. This spring the 40% shade cloth blew off the hoops above the tea and we had a hard frost that night. I covered the the next day but all of the new shoots died and the older leaves started turning brown. It was just too much of a change, I guess.

Some of the few blue elderberry root pieces I acquired are still showing signs of life.
The tea seeds that were started in the bulk bins are starting to make more effort to grow.
The tea plants started last year are looking healthy, nice dark green ... but still growing slowly.
I was gifted a Youpon plant this spring. It seems to be surviving. Yaupon is a tea plant that is native to the US. I'll likely get a lot more of them next year if this one survives.
