We decided to make another attempt to propagate our sunfish this summer. We had already built another trough in a hoop house last summer, so we had a great 'brood' trough to make the attempt. The first task was to identify males and females so we could minimize the number of fish we moved into that 'brood' trough. We figured with more adult fish in there, it was more likely that a lot of new hatchlings would get eaten before we could identify them and remove the larger fish.

We had previously tried to propagate the sunfish by tossing a few into each trough of the aqua house. That created kind of a problem getting those adult fish back out. It took a long time, and several attempts to try to get them out, and we couldn't catch them all with the plants and the silt on the bottom stirring up and taking away all visibility. In the end we left them and figured they would eat any hatchlings by this time anyway. But we had the rock nests from that attempt that we put into the outdoor 'brood' trough.

After identifying (as best we could) four pairs, we moved them into the outdoor trough using a five gallon bucket.

The outdoor trough was filled with water for several weeks before we transferred the fish. I hadn't thought to keep the water circulating during that time so it was basically a stagnant pool. And, yes, we had big pockets of mosquito larvae. Well, it seemed the adult fish didn't mind that at all, and made short work of them over the next couiple of weeks! With no plants in the trough, it would be easy to keep an eye on the nests and see if any of the fish started hovering over them or protecting them.

After identifying (as best we could) four pairs, we moved them into the outdoor trough using a five gallon bucket.
