This Year's Seedlings

The seeds we purchased from Akatsuka Orchid Gardens germinated well, and even better than expected. In excess of 3000 seedlings are growing in their conetainers.

They are already up to, and past, the point when we would like to have transplanted them into larger containers. For us, that's the deeppots. But as we still haven't emptied the older plants from the deeppots, and still haven't emptied the hoophouse where they would reside, we are delaying the transplanting.
Right now they are all setting off the ground under 'King Edward', the two hundred foot high Douglas Fir next to the barn. The airy open area under the fir, along with the heavy shade provided by the fir seems an ideal environment at this stage.
We salvaged a couple of the older specimen tea plants that were being decimated in the orchard by a gopher. we dug up and transplanted four of the plants before their roots were eaten, losing the other nine plants to the rodents voracious appetite. These two plants were moved into the center of the Fir truffle trees, and seem to be doing better.
We transplanted a coupole rows into an area behind the old barn that had a fair amount of shade. The trasnplanting went fairly smoothly, although there were a couple stones just below the surface that needed moving.
