Bathing the Tea

Our tea has been kept in tiny growing containers for WAY too long. They should have been planted out early last year. We got behind, and they are still in the greenhouse. That turned out to be, a little, fortuitous. If we had managed to get them planted out, it is likely that many more tea plants would have had their roots eaten and been destroyed by the gophers/voles that have decimated some of our plots this past winter.

In any case, the plants are low on nutrients and even with frequesnt watering a fair number are drying out. It seems that once the medium gets past a certain point of moisture loss, the applied water simply runs down the edges of the medium and out of the growing container with very little getting absorbed by the soil. To help rectify the situation, we decided to give them a bath. We placed all of the tea trays into the outdoor trough, and let them soak up the water for several hours before returning them to the greenhouse. A bunch were so dry they bobbed like corks when placed in the trough. Even after several hours, some had to be massaged under water to get them to start soaking up the water again.

While those tea plants were bathing, We pruned the small tea plot behind the old barn. So far, all of these plants have survived ... survived, as in not yet found by the gophers/voles! It is a very shady area and the leaves look a nice dark green. Although most of the leaves that were removed were older leaves, we processed them anyway. I was going to make more Quay tea, but Stephanie wanted them processed as green tea, just to taste the difference. So that's we did.
