Snow

If you didn't already know, we are located in Oregon in the central Coast Range. Although we can get some pretty cold temps, winters are generally mild, and we seldom get more than a dusting of snow. So, while many others might dislike snow, I'm pretty happy when we get some. In addition, we had a white Xmas, which is even more unusual.
The weather forecast, and FEMA, advised that were were going to get some overnight temperatures in the low twenties with daytime temps barely breaking above freezing. I was worried that many of the tea seedlings in their skinny tubes would not survive those low temps. So Stephanie and I moved all of the trays from under 'King Edward" (large Doug Fir tree) into the small (supposedly temporary) hoop house at the end of the barn. I set 2 foot rigid foam boards on the sides, and 4 foot foam boards on top of the tea, with a small temperature controlled heater that would blow warm air underneath onto the tea plants. As it turned out, so far, the temps have never gone below freezing.
We also had another visit of a herd of elk while the snow was covering most of the fields.
But the snow wasn't all fun. I forgot about checking the aqua house as it was snowing. There was enough accumulation that the weight of the snow pulled apart the lower edge of the plastic covering, bent half of the supporting metal poles inside, and knocked down the others. This was due to a partial shade cloth that was still covering a good portion of the plastic. It prevented the snow from sliding off. I mentioned that we needed to rebuild the aqua house this past fall. Obviously, that never got done . More cardio digging the snow out of there by hand. The repairs will have to wait for better weather.
