Elderberry & Yaupon

We collected a number of cuttings from a couple of native blue elderberry bushes that live about five miles away from us. We usually collect berries from them each year for syrups and gummies. We have only managed to keep two cuttings alive from the past years, likely due to voles. So we decided to start a bunch in hopes a few more will survive. We also have on order a few blue elderberry plants (4" pots) for diversity, along with ten black elderberry twelve-inch cuttings to try to get some of those established.

We received a packet of a couple hundred Yaupon seeds, which are native American tea plants. You may recall that we were gifted a Yaupon plant that was about 18 inches high, but it did not survive. Again, I assume voles? In any case we thought we would make a bit more effort to get some of these alternate tea plants started. According to the sellers, the seeds need about twelve weeks of stratification, both warm and cold. So we have started them in small, repurposed tissue culture trays where they will live for those three months until they are ready to sprout ... we hope. We also have another couple hundred seeds from a second vendor on their way.
