Field Tea, Apples & Water

If you have been following us, you might recall that we planted out the older tea plants into the back field. Those plants had been in tubes for over three years and were going downhill. We had so many plants wiped out by voles over the last two years that we were hesitant to plant out any more. But these older plants were not faring well in the tubes in the hoop house, so we decided to put them out anyway. As with the other plots, we didn't clear around them (in this case, mostly grass) so that the voles would have more to eat than just the tea plants. After their first winter, we only found about 10 plants out of 600 that still had leaves on them! But, we hope the plants would spring back up from the roots, so we flagged the tiny stems and mowed around them.
The left picture below is a tea plant in the Alder plot, tucked away within the surrounding weeds. That plot has a lot of promising new growth. The other picture shows another heirloom apple tree planted out in the back field near the tea. We now have three trees started there, and three more started in another field near the creek. They were all grown from seed from the old heirloom tree near the orchard. That tree is the one that lost a large branch that took out our orchard fence. The tree is old enough that the trunk is over two feet in diameter had hollow. Surprisingly, it is still producing a large amount of apples every year.
We are trying to help the tea roots rebound in the back field by giving them a bit of extra water. The picture on the right is a view of our spring tank and looking uphill toward the spring water pickup.
I also had the great opportunity to go out as a volunteer on the OSU research vessel Pacific Storm. Unfortunately I had NOT, as I was hoping, outgrown my motion sickness. And after just fifteen minutes of feeling horrible after we were out past the breakers, I tried to put on a patch that I had obtained from my doctor. The patch only stayed on for about twenty seconds ... it flew overboard as I leaned over the rail ... well, you probably know why I was leaning over. But, although I felt miserable most of the time out there, I consider it an awesome day!
