Tea, Fish, Shrooms

The tea plants that were transplanted inside the truffle tree patch had been pretty much ignored by deer and elk, until this year. Apparently they started taking a liking to the leaves and have been browsing them down this spring. It is interesting that my brother over in Alsea said pretty much the same thing about his tea plants. Perhaps a change in weather makes them smell or taste better? In any case mine were browsed down pretty well, but the larger, older plants did put on some new buds that have not been eaten.
The tea seedlings had all been under complete shade for the most part. The ones that were to be planted into the first protected bed were acclimated to the sunlight over a period of about six days before being transplanted. The first bed now contains eighty of those tea seedlings. It was also nice that there were several completely cloudy days after transplanting to help them to acclimate.
We did get some sunfish put into the outdoor trough to try to propagate them again. With a huge amount of mosquito larva and tadpoles in the trough, we were surprised that the fish seemed to make short work of them. In fact, I finally pulled out a dozen or so tadpoles into another tote because their numbers had dwindled drastically over a period of just a few days.
I had to put up a temporary screen over the entrance to the mushroom growing area to keep the barn swallows out as they were intent on making nests inside again this year. We also got in some more spawn and inoculating supplies for the outdoor mushroom logs.
