As is my usual, there were a few setbacks. Initial straw logs had a contamination rate of about 50%. Way too high to be sustainable. Part of that was due to the pasteurization, I'm sure. But I decided to step back a bit and build a dedicated shed in which to both pasteurize the straw, and to also let it cool down overnight with some protection from the outside air. The shed is almost put together. I still need to build a small box, perhaps two feet square and four long in which to hang the draining and cooling straw bags with a fan and filter to eliminate a lot of the airborne contaminants. Truck problems and winter storms have not helped, of course, but it is coming along.
Construction was started beginning in March of 2025 on the indoor grow area, which is located in the lower portion of the barn. As of today, 5/5/2025, the wiring and vents have been installed in the room, most of the ceiling has been covered, the lights have been installed, the room has been washed down and fans are helping to dry out the floor, the door is installed (but still needs trim), concrete splatter is being chipped away, and minor foam sealant and caulk are about to be applied.
The trees for the first set of bolts for the outdoor grow were cut down at the end of March. Most of our Alder trees are quite mature, so we had to pick out the few smaller, thinner trees that are appropriate. The inoculation tools and spawn for the logs has been ordered. The initial outdoor grow will only be about one hundred logs as it is our first attempt. As the logs tend to last up to six years, even with that small amount, we will end up with four to six hundred logs after several years. The outdoor inoculated logs will take about a year to grow through before they are ready to produce mushrooms.Oct 2025 --
The first few 'logs' of mushroom media have been pasteurized and inoculated with Pohu oyster mushrooms. The grow room has been sealed up enough to be able to maintain a 70+ degree growing temperature. An attempt will be made to start five or six more 20 pound straw 'logs' every five or seven days. In the meantime, the ControlByWeb X420 is being set up to monitor temperatures, humidity, etc.
